Painting Eggs
I draw tarty women with mascara
running down rouged cheeks,
moustachioed cavaliers with wicked eyes,
or clowns with whimsical smirks.

You use a kaleidoscope of shades
in an amazement of patterns,
suggesting the potential of ova.

But neither of us crush eggs,
so there’ll be no boats for witches,
nor will the shells, hurled into a fire,
raise a storm or stop hens laying.
